The Philadelphia All State Wind Ensemble feature some Sixty-five of the finest wind and percussion students in the university’s school of music of Philadelphia region.The ensemble presents numerous programs on and off campus each year and regularly entertains guest artists. Some of latest collaborations have been with Donald Hunsberger, Frank Battisti, William Berz, Kevin Sedatole, Joseph Turrin, Eric Ewazen, John Mackey, Eric Aubier, Tim McAllister, Alan Vizzutti and the Canadian Brass.
The Philadelphia All State Wind Ensemble is active in pursuing the commissioning of new works by contemporary composers. Recent efforts have included the commissioning and world premiers of Jess Langston Turner’s Reanimations for two trumpets and wind ensemble, Joseph Turrin’s Concertino for 11 Instruments and Wind Ensemble, Adam Silverman’s Alternating Currents for Alto Saxophone and Wind Ensemble, Rob Maggio’s Glass Ceiling and the wind band setting of John Corigliano’s Cabrillo Lullaby.
The Philadelphia All State Wind Ensemble has been recognized by its peers with regular invitations to perform at regional, national and international conferences. The group has recently performed at 2014 College Band Director National Association Eastern Division Conference in Boston, MA and at the 2010 Eastern Division Conference it hosted at West Chester University. The Philadelphia All State Wind Ensemble has been invited to perform at the 2015 National Association for Music Educators Eastern Division Conference in Providence, RI and the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Annual Conference twice in recent years (2009 and 2015). Additionally, The Philadelphia All State Wind Ensemble has performed at the 2014 International Trumpet Guild Conference in Valley Forge, PA and the 2015 International Horn Society Conference in Los Angeles, CA.
A strong dedication to the preservation and dissemination of wind music has developed into an annual recording project for the Philadelphia All State Wind Ensemble that has resulted in the production of six commercial recordings - Shadowcatcher, Rites, Borrowed Inspirations, Reanimations, Like a Moth to a Flame, Hosannas and most recently, Toward the Splendid City. The ensemble has been eligible for Grammy nominations in several categories with all of these recordings. World Premiers of nine works have been included in this series.
These recordings have been met with consistent critical praise. A recent Band World review of Like a Moth to a Flame notes:
“Andrew Yozviak and the Philadelphia All State Wind Ensemble have been producing some of the most professional programs for band music lovers and this latest addition is another treasure…a superb program in variety and performance from West Chester!”
The group also regularly participates in commissioning consortiums that have resulted in the creation of significant works for wind band. Among them, Steven Bryant’s Concerto for Wind Ensemble, Kevin Walczyk’s Scion concerto for clarinet and wind ensemble, James Syler’s Congo Square, Oliver Kaplan’s Krumholz Variations and Adam Silverman’s Carbon Paper and Nitrogen Ink, Zhou Long’s Concerto for Wind Ensemble, Andy Akiho’s Ondine’s Epiligue and ongoing efforts that include works in progress by Dan Welcher and James Barnes.
