The 1st MEET IN BEIJING Arts Festival

Thefestival opened with the Chinese production of Carmen directed by a French opera director and performed by the Central Opera Company, sung in Madarin, followed by the Vereinigate Buhnen Wien from Vienna and Royal Danish Ballet which set its foot on Chinese soil for the first time. The corps de ballet from Monte Carlo presented to the audience a breathtaking show. The concert held on May 27 featuring some of the top pop singers from Beijing, Hong Kong and Taiwan was hugely welcomed by fans.

Artists coming from 38 companies in 24 countries of Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia gave 11 performances in 15 indoor venues and 5 outdoor venues of Beijing, with the total audience up to 300,000. Meanwhile, 100,000 visitors were drawn to 5 big art exhibitions held in 4 venues including China National Gallery.

China President Jiang Zemin, Vice Premier Li Lanqing, Vice Chairman of NPC Wang Guangying were present at various performances. Kocheril Raman Narayanan, President of India who was paying a visit to Beijing, and Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, Danish Prime Minister, both attended the performance.
